PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The F-08 Fondren Diversion Channel Feasibility Study (Project ID: D140-00-00-E002) assesses existing flood risks, evaluates proposed flood mitigation alternatives, and recommends projects for implementation within the study area. The focus of the study is a subwatershed of Brays Bayou, roughly bounded by South Braeswood Boulevard to the north, Hillcroft Avenue to the east, Murphy Road to the west, and US 90A to the south. The study area is located within the Brays Bayou Watershed, with the majority in Harris County Precinct 1, and a small portion on the northern edge in Precinct 4.

The study evaluated several proposed alternatives to identify feasible flood reduction measures throughout two problem areas within the study limits. The study ultimately recommends preliminary engineering to pursue feasible stormwater detention basin options in the area and the removal of the berm between the D140-00-00 and D112-00-00 subwatersheds. Further, the study recommends additional planning to explore potential reductions in overflow stormwater entering into the D140 subwatershed.

Project Lifecycle

Every flood damage reduction project is unique. Yet each project begins and ends, with common and predictable milestones along the way. Whether a project moves forward – and how quickly – depends on many factors, including the availability of funding at each milestone, shifting community priorities for flood damage reduction, and other changing circumstances (such as the price of trees or concrete) from year to year.
