New Armand Bayou Stormwater Detention Basin to Begin Construction Soon

January 25, 2006
Harris County Commissioners Court recently approved a recommendation for the Harris County Flood Control District to award a $2.5 million contract for the excavation of a 46-acre stormwater detention basin along Armand Bayou.
Construction is expected to begin in April 2006.
When complete, the stormwater detention basin will be able to store roughly 57 million gallons of water, reducing the flood risks for those in the Armand Bayou watershed.
The basin will be constructed upstream of Fairmont Parkway in Pasadena, calling for the excavation of 500,000 cubic yards of soil. The basin will have two separate compartments, one on each side of the bayou.
Part of The Bigger Picture Along Armand Bayou
The basin is one component of flood damage reduction efforts in the Armand Bayou watershed. The District has completed two basins along Armand Bayou near Spencer Highway and Red Bluff Road. It is currently completing construction on a basin near Spencer Highway and Underwood Road. There are plans for six additional detention basins along the channel.
The Harris County Flood Control District has spent approximately $25 million on flood damage reduction projects in the Armand Bayou watershed since the 1980s.
