Fallbrook Stormwater Detention Basin Construction to Begin Soon

January 26, 2006
Harris County Commissioners Court recently approved a recommendation for the Harris County Flood Control District to award a $2.5 million contract for the excavation of a stormwater detention basin at White Oak Bayou, near Jones Road and Fallbrook Drive.

When complete, the Fallbrook Stormwater Detention Basin will be able to hold 237 acre-feet, or 77.2 million gallons, of stormwater that might otherwise flood homes and businesses.

Excavation of the basin will take an estimated 14 months, weather permitting, to complete. Construction is expected to begin in April 2006.

Part of the Bigger Picture Along White Oak Bayou
The Fallbrook Stormwater Detention Basin is part of the White Oak Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project - a large, current undertaking by the District that includes widening and deepening the channel from Tidwell to Jones roads, opening the Jersey Village Channel, and excavating nine regional stormwater detention basins. The purpose of the overall project is to significantly reduce the risk of flooding along White Oak Bayou. Since the early 1990s, the District has spent more than $34 million on the overall project. An additional $20 million has also been spent reducing flood risks in other parks of the White Oak Bayou watershed, including the Vogel Creek Conveyance Improvement Project.

In addition to the White Oak Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project, more than 700 homes have been purchased in the White Oak Bayou watershed by the District through voluntary home buyout programs to help residents move to higher ground.
