Brays Bayou Lower Reach Channel Widening to Begin Soon

The Harris County Flood Control District has awarded a $6.8 million contract to begin channel widening of the lower reach of Brays Bayou - a major milestone in the Brays Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project (Project Brays).
This segment of the project will widen the bayou from its mouth at the Houston Ship Channel to Lawndale Street. The work will take approximately 365 working days to complete, weather permitting.
This is the first of many segments that will widen the channel along a 21-mile stretch from its mouth to Fondren Road.
Stormwater Detention Also Part of Project Brays
In addition to the channel widening, the District is currently excavating four stormwater detention basins along Brays Bayou that temporarily store significant amounts of stormwater to reduce the risk of flooding. When fully functional, all four basins working together will be able to hold the equivalent of seven Reliant Astrodomes filled with water.
When Project Brays is complete, it will remove the 1% (100-year) floodplain from tens of thousands of homes and businesses. The $450 million project is estimated to be completed in 2014.
"I am pleased to see that flood protection is being brought to those living along Brays Bayou by the Harris County Flood Control District," said Pct. 2 Commissioner Sylvia Garcia. "This project has hit an important milestone in reducing flood risks, and I am a proud supporter."
Part of the Bigger Picture
Project Brays is a partnership project between the Harris County Flood Control District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It includes 21 miles of channel widening and deepening, four regional stormwater detention basins (including Willow Waterhole) and the replacement and/or modification of 32 bridges.
