First-Phase Construction Recently Completed on a Buffalo Bayou Tributary

April 7, 2006
After 18 months of construction, the Harris County Flood Control District has completed repairing severely eroded banks of a Buffalo Bayou tributary - a problem that once threatened a community of town homes and adjacent railroad tracks. Spanning from Buffalo Bayou to San Felipe, the tributary (W129-00-00) suffered from erosion and slope failure primarily caused by the flow of water in the channel.

Portion of Channel Now Underground
This $9.4 million project brought the tributary, which runs between the Raintree Place town home complex and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, underground using double 12-by-10 foot box culverts, improving stormwater conveyance with a slick concrete surface and reducing the risk of future erosion by moving the channel beneath the ground.

New underground box culverts, part of the rebuilt section of Buffalo Bayou tributary near San Felipe.

The project is the first of multiple phases to rehabilitate the channel. Future work will include similar construction upstream.

Project Recognized By Industry ... and Wildlife
In 2004, the project received an Engineering Excellence Award from the Texas Council of Engineering Companies for the project's design.

Since the completion of the project's first phase, the amount of sediment falling into the tributary has greatly reduced, improving the quality of water at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou. Fish and turtles have been spotted for the first time in many years where the box culverts open into Buffalo Bayou.
