Hill At Sims Greenway Stormwater Detention Basin is Complete

May 9, 2006
Construction of The Hill At Sims Greenway, a massive stormwater detention basin near Scott Street and West Orem Drive adjacent to Sims Bayou, is complete, bringing residents and business along the bayou greater protection against flooding.
This stormwater detention basin can hold approximately 1,000 acre-feet of storm water – about two-thirds the size of the Reliant Astrodome. The $6.5 million basin is designed to temporarily store stormwater during times of heavy rain.

A Model For Form And Function
Since its completion, The Hill at Sims Greenway has become a model stormwater detention basin and primary example of how flood control projects can be more than functional. Unlike other District detention basins, this basin features a hill that is almost 60 feet tall. The hill feature alone required almost 1.6 million cubic yards of soil, utilized from on-site excavation and disposal – total detention excavation was more than 2.1 million cubic yards of soil. When standing on top of the hill, the site appears almost canyon-like, offering spectacular views of the Downtown Houston skyline. The project has created a large, natural setting in the Cloverland subdivision in southeast Houston.
A Perfect Candidate For Multi-use Features
The District hopes to partner with another entity, such as Harris County or the City of Houston, to adopt the site and create park amenities and multi-use features for area residents. Nearly 10,000 trees have been planted at the site.

Construction on the detention basin began in July, 2004. The basin, in addition to two other basins along Sims Bayou, will work in conjunction with a federal project to widen and deepen Sims Bayou. (The three detention basins are local projects.)
Part of The Bigger Picture Along Sims Bayou
The Sims Bayou Federal Flood Damage Reduction Project is a partnership between the District and the Army Corps of Engineers. The $344 million project includes 19.3 miles of channel widening and deepening, beginning at the Houston Ship Channel and ending near Croquet Street, just west of South Post Oak Road.
