Deer Park Stormwater Detention Basin Construction Nearly Complete

May 11, 2006
The Harris County Flood Control District is quickly nearing completion of a large stormwater detention basin in the Deer Park and La Porte area. The basin, located in the Armand Bayou watershed, will hold 246 million gallons of stormwater (about half a Reliant Astrodome of stormwater storage).

Significant Flood Damage Reduction for The Area
The basin, combined with recent improvements to a tributary of Willowspring Creek, is expected to significantly reduce the risk of flooding for the Brookglen and Spencer Village Estates neighborhoods.
"These subdivisions were hit hard during Tropical Storm Allison," said Pct. 2 Commissioner Sylvia Garcia. "This project should provide residents much relief from flooding."
The stormwater detention basin is located in Deer Park, just north of Spencer Highway, south of Pasadena Boulevard, west of Underwood Road and east of East Boulevard. The improved segment of the tributary extends south from the basin to Canada Road (about 3,200 feet) in La Porte. It has been widened and concrete-lined to improve stormwater conveyance.
Construction on the $5.3 million project began in 2002. Nearly 1.3 million cubic yards of dirt have been removed for the project.
Multi-Use Enhances Community and Natural Values
Furthermore, once the stormwater detention basin is fully excavated, the city of Deer Park has plans to build park amenities on the 80-acre site to be used during times of dry weather. Plans call for baseball, soccer and football fields, several ponds, and a wildlife lookout, said Doug Burgess, director of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
"This detention basin is a perfect example of how the Flood Control District and local governments can work together to allow flood-control sites to function as parks," Garcia said. "The surrounding communities will experience double the benefits from this project."
