Brays Bayou Channel Widening Has Begun

May 22, 2006
The widening of Brays Bayou has begun. Contractors have been surveying and clearing the area near the mouth of Brays Bayou at the Houston Ship Channel in preparation for a project to widen the bayou in this area by 60 feet.
The Harris County Flood Control District awarded a $6.8 million contract to begin widening Brays Bayou – a major milestone in the Brays Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project (Project Brays). The channel widening – combined with four, stormwater detention basins and modification of 32 bridges – is expected to remove the 1% (100-year) floodplain from nearly 30,000 residences and businesses along the bayou.

First of Several Segments of Channel Widening
The first segment of channel widening will extend from the bayou’s mouth to Lawndale Street. The work will take approximately 365 working days to complete, weather permitting. Subsequent segments will widen the bayou upstream to Fondren Road.
Overall work on Project Brays, a $450 million project, is estimated to be completed in 2014.
Stormwater Detention Basins Play Vital Role in Flood Damage Reduction
In addition to the channel widening, the District is currently excavating four stormwater detention basins in the Brays Bayou watershed. These basins temporarily store excess stormwater to reduce the risk of flooding for the area. When fully functional, all four basins working together will be able to hold the equivalent of seven Reliant Astrodomes of stormwater.
"Project Brays is really progressing. In addition to the four stormwater detention basins, the widening of the bayou will provide residents further protection against flooding," said Pct. 2 Commissioner Sylvia Garcia.
As Project Brays progresses, various community groups are discussing ways to raise funds to build hike and bike trails and other park amenities adjacent to the bayou once widening is complete.
"This project will create additional green space adjacent to the bayou that I hope will one day serve as a linear park and extensive trail system," Garcia said.
