New Halls Bayou Stormwater Detention Site Being Prepared for Construction

August 21, 2006
The Harris County Flood Control District is currently preparing a site in the Halls Bayou watershed for construction of a stormwater detention basin that will reduce flooding risks for those who live along the bayou.

Preparations Underway
Last month, the District began removing utility poles and culverts in the Bretshire area just west of U.S. 59 near Jensen Drive. Workers are currently blocking off and breaking up streets that once led to a subdivision of several hundred homes. The homes, which have flooded frequently in the past, were purchased by the District, with plans to build a detention project that brings the surrounding area flood-relief. All homeowners have been relocated to homes on higher ground.

Once all obstructions have been moved from the site, the District will begin constructing the basin in early 2007.

More Stormwater Detention Construction is Also Underway
The District is currently constructing a 112-acre detention basin just upstream of the Bretshire site at Keith-Wiess Park. When complete, the basin will hold approximately 300 million gallons of stormwater that might otherwise flood homes and businesses.
