Land Purchased for New Hunting Bayou Detention Basin Construction

December 11, 2006
The Harris County Flood Control District has purchased a 75-acre tract of land in northeast Houston to construct a large stormwater detention basin to help reduce flooding risks for those living near Hunting Bayou, which tends to overflow during times of very heavy rain, as demonstrated during the June and October 2006 flood events.
When constructed, the stormwater detention basin, which will be located near Loop 610 and Homestead Road, will hold 300 million gallons of stormwater. The land was purchased for $5.7 million. Construction on the basin is expected to begin in mid-2007.
One Component to a Larger Flood Damage Plan for Hunting Bayou
The basin will serve as one component of an overall plan to reduce flood damages for an estimated 5,000 residences in the Hunting Bayou watershed. The plan, called the Upper Hunting Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Plan, also includes widening and deepening the bayou over the next decade from U.S. 59 to Wayside Drive, about a 3-mile stretch. In accordance with community and natural values, the improved bayou will remain in its earthen, grass-lined state and create opportunities for linear parks and hike-and-bike trails.
The Hunting Bayou watershed is a highly urbanized, 31-square mile watershed in northeast Houston. It lies almost completely within the city limits of Houston, Galena Park and Jacinto City.
Hunting Bayou is about 16 miles in length and drains into the Houston Ship Channel.
