FEMA Releases Final Letter of Determination for New Floodplain Maps

Signifies Final Step In Tropical Storm Allison Recovery Project and Beginning of Six-Month Official Adoption Period

December 18, 2006
FEMA has released the Letter of Final Determination, which is the final step in the Tropical Storm Allison Recovery Project (TSARP). As a result of this letter, the Revised Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps will become the effective maps for Harris County at the end of a six-month regulatory adoption period.

Purchase Flood Insurance Now, Save Money Later
When the official Flood Insurance Rate Maps become effective on June 18th, 2007, flood insurance requirements and/or costs may be affected. There are benefits to purchasing flood insurance now because the easiest way to qualify for what's called the "grandfathering provision" is to have a flood insurance policy in place when the new maps become effective. The grandfathering provision can help reduce an individual's insurance cost by hundreds of dollars in some cases.

How The Grandfathering Provision Works
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) allows most property owners who purchase flood insurance before the new maps become official to "grandfather" their existing floodplain status and save on flood insurance costs. Buying flood insurance now will not only reduce flood insurance costs, but grandfathered policies can be passed on to future owners of a property, provided coverage doesn't lapse. The same holds true for property owners who already have flood insurance. Those who wait until after June 18 to act may pay premiums that correspond with their actual floodplain status according to the new maps.

View or Download The Maps Now
The Revised Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps contain all of the accepted appeals and protests and will become the effective maps on June 18th, 2007. You can view and download the maps on the TSARP website, www.tsarp.org, by using either the Interactive Mapping Tool or the FEMA Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) Lookup Tool.
