Sims Bayou Buffalo Speedway Bridge Replacement to Begin Soon

February 9, 2007
The Harris County Flood Control District will soon begin a $3.4 million construction project to replace the Buffalo Speedway bridge over Sims Bayou in south Harris County. The project is expected to take about 170 working days to complete. Working days exclude weekends, county holidays and days compromised by bad weather.

Newer Bridge Designs Reduce Flood Risks
The Buffalo Speedway bridge project is one of many components of the $345 million Sims Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project, a partnership project with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that will remove the 1% (100-year) floodplain from 35,000 homes in the Sims Bayou watershed.

The Sims Bayou Flood Damage Reduction Project, which includes 19 miles of channel widening and deepening and three stormwater detention basins, also calls for the replacement or modification of 20 bridges. The entire project began in 1990 and is expected to be complete in 2009. Since its implementation, the project has spared thousands of homes and businesses in the Sims Bayou watershed from flooding.
