Voluntary Home Buyout Program Brings Relief to Homeowners in Northwest Harris County

February 10, 2007
The Harris County Flood Control District, in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has begun implementing voluntary home buyout in the Norchester and Ponderosa Forest subdivisions in northwest Harris County. A $1.4 million grant from FEMA, combined with $472,000 in matching funds from the Flood Control District has allowed the District to purchase eight homes that have incurred repetitive flood losses and help residents move to higher ground. The purchase of these homes began this month.

FEMA funds were made available through a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. Most of the homes eligible for the grant are located in northwest Harris County. The District expects to be able to purchase a totel of 50 to 70 homes and help residents relocate to higher ground.

Homes included in the initial grant application were chosen because they were located hopelessly deep in the floodplain or had repetitive loss claims.
