South Made Creek Rehabilitation Project Continues

February 13, 2007
A major rehabilitation project is progressing steadily on a tributary of South Mayde Creek near Katy that has experienced erosion, sink holes, silt build-up and broken concrete lining. The $170,000 maintenance project is taking place on the channel just west of the intersection of Saums and Greenhouse roads. The channel is both earthen and concrete-lined.

Soils in Harris County are particularly subject to erosion because of their soft, sandy nature. Repairing eroded side slopes reduces the amount of sediment that falls into a channel and helps maintain the channel's carrying capacity. To reduce the risk of future erosion, a channel's banks are often laid back to form gentler side slopes.

The project began earlier this month and is expected to be complete by late March, weather permitting.

The Flood Control District maintains about 2,500 miles of channels countywide.
