Tropical Storms and Hurricanes are one of the greatest threats to the Texas Coast!
Hurricane season lasts from June 1 until November 30. That's six full months of potential tropical system threats to our area! Knowledge and preparedness are the two greatest assets for individuals faced with an approaching tropical system. The District's Tropical Weather Center can help you prepare, and is intended as an additional information source for Harris County area residents.
If an emergency hurricane or flood situation exists, please contact your local office of emergency management for more information, as well as recommendations and procedures. Stay tuned to your local TV or radio station for breaking news and updates.

Before Hurricane Season Starts
Inventory your property. Review your insurance policy, REMEMBER homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage, and there is normally a 30-day waiting period before a new policy becomes effective. For more information on how to purchase flood insurance, visit the National Flood Insurance Website, www.fema.gov/business/nfip/ or contact your insurance agent. Take care of this now!
Learn a safe primary and alternate evacuation route.
Decide now where you will go, the time it will take to get there, and let others know of your plan.
Stock up on plywood and hardware to secure your home. Stock up on all other emergency supplies. This will help avoid long lines at the store when other preparations are necessary.
Keep trees and branches trimmed. Remove dead limbs and trees.
Make arrangements for pets, they are not allowed in shelters.
Most important... STAY PREPARED. Individual needs for preparedness will vary from location to location and person to person.
