The Vogel Creek Conveyance Improvement Project

About the Project
The Vogel Creek Conveyance Improvement Project has been implemented by the Harris County Flood Control District to reduce the risk of flooding from Vogel Creek. The project begins at White Oak Bayou and extends upstream about 8,300 feet to Arncliffe Drive. Overall the project requires:

Acquisition of right-of-way along Vogel Creek, including demolition of existing structures
Relocation of various utilities and pipelines
Removal of an existing pedestrian bridge
Significant enlargement of Vogel Creek
Replacement or modification of four roadway bridges with associated roadway modifications (three by the District and one by the City of Houston)
Replacement of four golf cart bridges (HCFCD has delayed the replacement of four new golf cart bridges in the Inwood Forest Golf Course, pending the country club’s advisement of the status of the East Course. When this issue is resolved, HCFCD is prepared to respond appropriately and honor our commitments under the Settlement Agreement with Inwood Forest Golf & Country Club.)

Before construction began in 2006, Vogel Creek was an average of 70 feet wide and only capable of conveying a storm that had a 50% chance of occurring in any given year. Upon completion of the project, Vogel Creek will be 150-165 feet wide and is expected to be capable of conveying a storm that only has a 1% chance of happening in any given year.

The project will be completed in multiple phases, with an estimated total budget of $27 million.

UPDATE: Construction of the ultimate channel improvments began in May 2006 and is expected to be complete in approximately 30 months, depending on weather.

As of December 2007, construction of the project is 74 percent complete and the District has spent $6.95 million of the $9.4 million dollar construction budget. (The budget was recently reduced in early 2007 from $9.8 million due to the delay of the installation of the golf cart bridges.)
