FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FIRST PHASE OF MEYERGROVE STORMWATER DETENTION BASIN COMPLETED, BRINGING FLOOD RELIEF TO SOUTHWEST HOUSTON

HOUSTON, TEXAS – January 31, 2025 – The Harris County Flood Control District has completed construction on Phase 1 of the Meyergrove Stormwater Detention Basin, an important flood mitigation project benefiting communities along Brays Bayou near the southwest corner of the I-610 Loop.

This newly completed phase provides 80 acre-feet of stormwater storage—approximately 27 million gallons—helping reduce flood risks for nearby neighborhoods. In addition to its flood control benefits, the project features new recreational trails, benches, and trash receptacles, funded through Harris County Precinct 1 and a federal grant, enhancing the space for public use.

Construction on this phase began in February 2024 and was completed in January 2025, with a total project cost of $19 million. The project was made possible through federal Community Directed Funding secured by Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07), as well as funds from the Flood Control District’s 2018 Bond Program.

With Phase 1 completed, efforts are already underway for the next phase of the project. A second phase of the stormwater detention basin is currently in design just west of the newly completed site, promising further improvements in stormwater management.
