PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project involves the creation of a regional detention basin that includes three compartments along South Mayde Creek, near the intersection of Clay Road and Grand Parkway. The project includes right-of-way acquisition, design, and construction of three stormwater detention basins. Stormwater detention basins generally reduce flooding risk by providing additional temporary stormwater storage volume during heavy rain events and releasing the water back to the receiving creek or bayou when the water level in the receiving system has receded. The goal of the project is to reduce flooding risk in the surrounding area.

Location

Regional detention basin(s) along South Mayde Creek, near the intersection of Clay Road and Grand Parkway.

Stage

This project is currently in the DESIGN Stage. On October 26, 2021, a PER (Preliminary Engineering Report) was presented to and approved by Harris County Commissioners Court. It includes an alternative for a basin that will maintain a permanent pool of water for maximum stormwater detention. Following approval of the PER, the Flood Control District is proceeding with design and phased construction of the basins.

Bond Listing

Bond Project C-48 is a potential "Partnership" project. Total allocation for this project is currently $94 million on the 2018 Bond Program Project List, of which approximately $84.6 million would be partnership funding, and $9.4 million would be local costs.

Project Lifecycle

Every flood damage reduction project is unique. Yet each project begins and ends, with common and predictable milestones along the way. Whether a project moves forward – and how quickly – depends on many factors, including the availability of funding at each milestone, shifting community priorities for flood damage reduction, and other changing circumstances (such as the price of trees or concrete) from year to year.
