Groundbreaking Marks T.C. Jester Stormwater Detention Basin Construction Milestone

Compartment 1B will add 793 acre-feet of stormwater storage capacity in the Cypress Creek watershed

WHAT:
Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey and Harris County Flood Control District Executive Director Marcus Y. Stuckett will join project partners on Wednesday, Aug. 19, for a ceremonial groundbreaking for Compartment 1B of the T.C. Jester Stormwater Detention Basin.

The $18.6 million construction contract will create 793 acre-feet of stormwater storage capacity on approximately 44 acres along Cypress Creek. Construction will include approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of excavation and an overflow weir designed to allow stormwater from Cypress Creek to enter the stormwater detention basin during heavy rain.

Compartment 1B is one of four compartments planned as part of the T.C. Jester Stormwater Detention Basin. Together, the compartments are expected to provide approximately 1,200 acre-feet of stormwater storage capacity and reduce flood risk in the Cypress Creek watershed.

Funding includes $12 million in state community project funding secured by state Rep. Sam Harless through the Texas Water Development Board and up to $12.5 million through the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program. The federal grant funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by the Texas General Land Office.
