Keeping Addicks Reservoir Watershed Flowing: 3 Major Maintenance Projects Underway

Across the Addicks Reservoir watershed, aging flood control infrastructure has led to erosion, sediment buildup, and damage in many channels. Left unaddressed, this damage reduces how much stormwater these channels can carry compared to their original design capacity.

That’s why major maintenance work is now underway. The Flood Control District is restoring these channels to ensure the watershed continues to function as intended.

Construction efforts include the following three projects:

Rehabilitation of Channels Inside the Addicks Reservoir

Focusing on multiple channels within the reservoir, our maintenance team is:

  • Removing sediment
  • Stabilizing erosion
  • Repairing cracks in concrete and completing other repairs

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has jurisdiction over the Addicks Reservoir. The Flood Control District has easements along certain channel segments within the Addicks Reservoir that allow maintenance activities.

Estimated Completion: Q3 2026

Addicks Channel Restoration & Rehabilitation Project

This large-scale, $25 million project will restore upstream channels at 24 sites identified so far. Planned work includes:

  • Repairing erosion and slope failures
  • Removing sediment buildup and blockage
  • Restoring concrete channel linings and outfall structures

Estimated Completion: Q4 2030

FEMA Sediment Removal Program

The Hurricane Harvey Disaster Recovery Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Sediment Removal Program will remove excess sediment that was deposited in the Addicks Reservoir watershed due to extreme flooding conditions during Harvey.

In all, we expect to remove more than 27,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Addicks Reservoir watershed, or enough to fill nearly 3,000 dump trucks.
